The Sabre Regiment: 7th PA Cavalry

Join us at SCHS for an informative evening about the Civil War’s 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry, including human-interest stories of the troopers who served.

Larry Fryer of Woodstock, MD, a descendant of a trooper with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry, has researched the regiment the past 20 years.  He reviewed the regimental records, court-martial records, each of the 2,652 military service records and over 600 pension files at the National Archives, Washington, DC.  He has transcribed the entirety of the Pottsville Miners' Journal from 1861-1865, related to the 16 contributing troopers of the 7th who wrote back to the newspaper.

Fryer will be presenting a brief history of the regiment, focusing on the personalities recruited from Schuylkill County and on the human-interest stories of the troopers.  Included will be many photographs of the soldiers, and relics collected over the years.

Fryer formed the "7th Pa Cavalry Descendant's Association", which has had five reunions over the years, and presently has a Facebook page for the 200+ members.
