The History of Intellectual and Creative Property (“IP”) in Schuylkill County

From the earliest moments of Schuylkill County’s founding up until the present, our region has played a pivotal role in shaping the Intellectual Property (“IP”) landscape of the United States. Some of the county’s most sought-after inventions and IP have been created right here in Schuylkill County. Inventors and creators applied their craft and singled out IP, to make this county a leading source for applied innovation. Moreover, IP has played a key role in shaping this nation’s economic landscape.

This unique program will explore some of the IP that has been critical in shaping this county, this state, this county and the world. Just some of the Inventions from the county that we will explore include:

  • One of the 1st patents in the county, created between Middleport and New Philadelphia in the early 1800s developed around coal furnace technology.

  • the IP of musical songs published in Shenandoah and across the coal region

  • The 1st automotive title in the country that was based in Port Carbon

  • National brands such as Yuengling that in 1894 were involved in a Patent case before the US federal circuit court, southern district of NY

  • Local company, Mrs Ts understanding the importance of IP and trade secrets in order to build business defensibility

  • We will showcase inventions of the past and bring it up to date by exploring some of the current IP and inventions that have been developed in Schuylkill County. This includes recent assets around World Cup star Lionel Messi, as well as world class Film and Music IP driving the future of entertainment.

We will also explore what economic benefit was derived as a result of the inventions by the inventors and creators.  We will highlight the massive wealth that was created by those involved in and around such inventions.

We will provide an overview of IP definitions, and a look at how the county stacks up relative to other regions of the county and the world. We will also discuss what needs to occur next to ensure we safeguard the future innovations that will continue to come out of our very innovative county. We will help each audience member create a game plan that they can utilize to progress their own innovations and creativity as well as monetization of such property.
